FIGR.018 THE LAND HOUSE

The house is elevated lightly above the sloping terrain, allowing program to slip beneath the main living level and working with, rather than against, the natural fall of the land. This elevation reduces ground disturbance and creates a sense of inhabitation among the tree canopy, lending the project an almost tree-house quality — sheltered, immersive and connected to the surrounding bushland. Beneath, the landscape is allowed to flow uninterrupted, reinforcing the building’s relationship to the site and enhancing passive cooling and fire defensibility.

“An almost tree-house quality, sheltered, immersive, connected.”

The material palette is intentionally restrained to three primary finishes: rammed earth, off-form concrete and timber. This reduction allows the architectural form to be read clearly, foregrounding mass, proportion and shadow. The composition operates less as a singular object and more as a series of tonal fields — a quiet dialogue between solids and voids, light and depth, not unlike a Rothko painting translated into space. Architecture becomes backdrop and frame, allowing landscape, light and daily life to take precedence.

“Generous but measured, connected yet retreative.”

Beyond its romantic readings, the house is fundamentally pragmatic. It is a robust family home designed to support long-term occupation, adaptability and the rhythms of a busy household. Spaces are generous but measured, connected yet retreative, offering durability, comfort and clarity for a growing family navigating contemporary life.
